We recently had the chance to showcase two variants of the RoseCraft Traditional Otter Creek Barlow – the Stag and Blue Denim Micarta versions – and the response has been fantastic. These knives represent everything we love about modern traditional pocket knives, and we’re excited to share our thoughts.

Handle Showdown: Stag vs. Blue Denim Micarta
During our hands-on comparison, we had the opportunity to handle both the Stag (RCT020-STG) and Blue Denim Micarta (RCT020-BDM) variants. While both are beautifully executed, there was a clear preference for the Blue Denim Micarta version.
Why the Blue Denim Micarta won:
- Smoother feel in hand compared to the textured stag
- Consistent grip without the natural variations of horn
- Modern aesthetic that complements the traditional design
- Durability that will age gracefully with use
Don’t get us wrong – stag handles have their devoted following, and RoseCraft’s execution is flawless. But for everyday carry and extended use, the Blue Denim Micarta just felt more refined and practical.
What Makes This Barlow Special
The Otter Creek Barlow succeeds because it respects traditional design while incorporating modern materials and manufacturing precision. The D2 steel choice is particularly smart – it offers excellent edge retention while remaining easy to sharpen. The brushed satin finish is both practical and attractive, hiding scratches while providing a professional appearance.
The half-stop is a standout feature that adds safety without compromising the traditional feel. Combined with the swedging, it shows RoseCraft’s attention to both form and function.
Looking Ahead: Our Special Factory Order
Based on the positive response to these knives, we’re exploring a Special Factory Order (SFO) with RoseCraft Blades. Here’s what we’re considering:
Size Adjustment: We’re thinking slightly smaller than the current 3.5″ closed model – possibly around 3″ closed for better pocket carry while maintaining the classic Barlow proportions.
Blade Configuration: Staying with the clip point design that works so well in the current model, but scaled appropriately for the smaller frame.
Handle Materials Under Consideration:
- Canvas Micarta for a different texture while maintaining the smooth feel we prefer
- Black Linen Micarta for a classic, grippy option that ages beautifully
- Natural Canvas Micarta as a middle ground between synthetic and natural materials
- Smooth Bone for traditionalists who want refinement over texture
